Transitions in rapidly rotating convection driven dynamos.

Numerical simulations of dynamos in rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection in plane layers are presented. Two different types of dynamos exist which obey different scaling laws for the amplitude of the magnetic field. The transition between the two occurs within a hydrodynamically uniform regime which can be classified as rapidly rotating convection.

The Secular Bar-mode Instability in Rapidly Rotating Stars Revisited

Uniformly rotating, homogeneous, incompressible Maclaurin spheroids that spin sufficiently rapidly are secularly unstable to nonaxisymmetric, bar-mode perturbations when viscosity is present. The intuitive explanation is that energy dissipation by viscosity can drive an unstable spheroid to a stable, triaxial configuration of lower energy – a Jacobi ellipsoid. But what about rapidly rotating co...

On the Behavior of Velocity Fluctuations in Rapidly Rotating Flows

The behavior of velocity fluctuations subjected to rapid rotation is examined. The rapid rotation considered is any arbitrary combination of two basic forms of rotation, reference frame rotation and mean flow rotation. It is recognized that the two types of rotating flows differ in the manner in which the fluctuating fields are advected. The first category is comprised of flows in rotating syst...

A New Criterion for Bar{forming Instability in Rapidly Rotating Gaseous and Stellar Systems. Ii. Nonaxisymmetric Form

We have previously introduced the parameter as an indicator of stability to m = 2 nonaxisymmetric modes in rotating, self{gravitating, axisymmetric, gaseous ( < 0:34) and stellar ( < 0:25) systems. This parameter can be written as = (ft=2), where t T=jW j, T is the total rotational kinetic energy, W is the total gravitational potential energy, and f is a function characteristic of the topology/...

The Effect of Normal Anisotropy on Thin-Walled Tube Bending

Thin-walled tube bending has common applications in the automobile and aerospace industries. The rotary-draw-bending method is a complex physical process with multi-factor interactive effects and is one of the advanced tube forming processes with high efficiency, high forming precision, low consumption and good flexibility for bending angle changes. However, it may cause a wrinkling phenomenon,...
